The equations to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) are normally used to assess renal function. Most traditional equations have limited precision. Recently a new equation for the calculation of the GFR has been developed and published. This is the CKD-EPI equation that has been shown to be more accurate than other more traditional equations. The variables included in the CKD-EPI equation to estimate the GFR are the value of serum creatinine (expressed well in umol/l or mg/dl), sex, race and age. In recent studies publications, it has been evident that the CKD-EPI equation is more accurate than the MDRD study equation along a wide variety of clinical populations and conditions.
